He thought he saw an Elephant, that practised on a fife:

For a split second I saw a twelve-pound blue-eyed white cat crouched by the kitchen doorway.

He looked again, and found it was a letter from his wife.

Just the bag of kitchen trash that I've not taken out yet.

"At length I realise," he said, "the bitterness of Life!"

Sometimes it takes awhile, I guess.

Hugs, you. I'm still catching myself starting to say "Hi, Romeo!" when I walk into the office. Or occasionally calling one of the cats Romeo. And I still sometimes miss my Brazil-kitty, especially the way she'd stretch out next to my pillow so we could cuddle each other to sleep with my hand on her belly and her back paws against my palm. They really work their way into our psyches and hearts.
