One thing about being awake and not going to yoga is that I'm reading Dreamwidth on my real laptop instead of at work. Which means that I see siderea's The Recipe for how to build community on DW, and have the time/space to share and reflect on it.

I've some sort of personal aversion to short linky posts without much to say about them: it doesn't feel like DW is the right venue for that. But I do recognise that more posts are better for engagement / community. So.

And maybe this will get me back in the habit of, you know, /writing/ here.

Everything you posted is quite good --I'd read the twitter story before, but not Siderea's.

I think her recipe is missing "comments", which is like...the a-number-one best part of Dreamwidth/LJ style bloggery for me. Even a comment saying "I like this!" gets me more happy than an equivalent clicky-button would do. (As evidenced by my feelings of vague disappointment every time Twitter says I have ten notifications and that turns out to be only one reply)

Comments are good. Comments are likely to keep me writing.

But I can't write comments to my posts and be successful (except as part of a _conversation_ that someone else already engaged in). So it's not fully relevant to the recipe of what I can do on my blog to increase community. You could say that comments and engagement are the _goal_ of the recipe, not _part_ of the recipe.

Of course, commenting on other peoples entries helps and is important.

There's probably some useful guidance to be had around how to engage in comments and how to keep people coming back... but yeah, I absolutely agree re "goal not part of".

I think she's looking at comments as a result of engagement, not as something you can do to promote engagement? I mean, comments are the way that one /has/ community on DW. (That and communities, I guess, which I never really got the hang of even on LJ.) So, yeah, definitely leave comments and talk to people! But I think this is more along the lines of "how can i make my journal a place where people will want to comment."

And even at that it's incomplete. rydra_wong has a couple of link roundups over the last few days that go into more depth. I'm not linking because, well, they feel like more calculation than I'm willing to put into it? The nice thing about Siderea's recipe is that it's basically "here is a simple way to adapt what you're already doing."

(but yes. yay comments! comments are good for the ego.)
