Way back when, probably in August, I pre-ordered Command and Colors: Ancients, a light wargame set in the ancient world. (It uses the same system as Battle Cry and Memoir '44, should that mean anything to any of you.) Or rather I had Ross preorder it, for reasons that are no longer exactly clear in my mind. (Something to do with availability of funds at the time.) What with one thing and another the delays kept mounting up, with the result that Ross had moved away by the time the package arrived at his house this weekend. So tonight I finally got out and picked it up.
It doesn't have cool plastic minis, but they managed to avoid going the tiny-chit route as well. Instead the units are represented by wooden blocks with pictures on both sides. A lot of wooden blocks. And they don't come pre-printed; there are sheets of stickers included that I'll have to apply.
I knew all this when I preordered the game. I'd seen some comments online about people being kind of overwhelmed by the sheer number of pieces in the box. None of that prepared me for the reality of hefting a bag of three hundred forty-five wooden blocks. This is roughly a half-gallon plastic bag, full of 1/4" x 1/4" x 1/8" pieces of wood. All of which requires stickers on two sides.
Yowza.
