U.S. warns Canada against easing pot laws: "David Murray, right-hand man to U.S. 'drug czar' John Walters, says he doesn't want to tread on another country's sovereignty, but warned there would be consequences if Canada proceeds with a plan to decriminalize the possession of marijuana." Christ.

Watched X-Men 1.5 at J.'s in preparation for X2 last night. Still pretty, still good. Ian McKellen is hands-down the best thing about that movie. (Or the second movie, for that matter, but I'm getting ahead of myself.) The splicing-in of extra scenes was rather poorly done, and most of them deserved to be left on the cutting-room floor. "Prove it." "You're a dick." is still good for a laugh. It's ultimately no surprise that Magneto lost-- he had three assistants, whereas Xavier had potentially the whole school. Plus Magneto kept throwing his assistants at the whole group of good guys one or two at a time.

Then X2. Pretty darn cool. Magneto remains not so much an absolute villain-- yay shades of grey. His escape scene is one of the three best in the film (along with the White House opening and the school fight). More mutants introduced. (Nightcrawler totally rocked my world, but Nightcrawler has always been my favorite.) Apart from the Gaping Plot Hole[1] at the end that exists so that we can have the Phoenix in the sequel it was pretty good. (Not enough development of Deathstrike, by a long shot. The fight between her and Wolverine just didn't really feel all that involving. Pretty, but you don't really care about her. At all.) Worth the three stars that Roger Ebert gave it.

Then we went over and hung out at Patrick's for a bit, then home and crash. And today my Shakespeare final. Yay fun.

[1] When one's main problems involve a large amount of water moving in one's general direction, one should take stock of all the ways one might have to deal with this water. Such as, say, someone whose talents are inclined in that direction anyway, as opposed to sending the person whose talents, well, aren't.

The ink swirls in the air when Nightcrawler teleports have to be some of my favorite special effects ever.

Missed the Dr. McCoy cameo until I saw the character's name in the credits...teach me to not pay attention to things happening in the background...

Did you catch the Stan Lee cameo? I assume there was one, since there was in Daredevil and in X1, but I missed it this time. I also missed it in Spiderman, but I haven't seen it again to look for it.
