on classes, and the futility thereof
Nov. 6th, 2001 11:21 amso i sat down and did some math, and it's entirely possible that i'm just wasting my time by taking classes. not in the sense that a degree won't do me any good, but in the sense that i may not be allowed to *get* a degree with my Prior History. so i've made an appointment with my advisor to go and talk to him about it tomorrow.
shee-it. i don't know what i'll do if i'm hosed for school. well. yes i do. i'll stay in bleaksburg for the rest of my life, never making above $30K, because i really just don't have the motivation to sit through any more generic freshman courses than i'm already going to have to. dammit. would you like some fries with that?
at this point i really just have to assume that It Will All Work Out, at least until i get to talk to my advisor tomorrow, because otherwise i won't get anything done at all today. not that i have yet anyway, but the day is young.
if i manage to take (and sufficiently pass) six hours each semester, plus three each summer session, i can have an undergrad degree by the time i'm thirty.
i've also been looking at my options, and it looks like, in addition to an english major, i can come up with either a CS minor and other minor (likely theatre), or a theatre major. some less likely alternatives include a philosophy major, an IDST (formerly LASCI) major, and various Liberal Arts And Crafts minors. i'm thinking hard about the theatre major, but i don't know that it would do me much real good. contrariwise, the CS minor would be fairly useful but a pain in the neck to get. and i can't exactly afford to screw up any courses at this point. so what i'll probably do is go ahead and declare a theatre minor so i can get into a basic theatre course, and figure out whether it's a major or minor later on.
of course, that really depends on whether the CS minor has any sort of enrollment restriction. vond? nathan? adam?

Date: 2001-11-06 11:35 am (UTC)the real issue, of course, is whether i can do the work for CS courses, plus any other course i happen to be taking, plus work 40 hrs at syncad, plus get enough sleep, plus keep myself interested in the work. it's those last two that are the hard ones.
well, that plus not being sure how much i want a CS career... the money's nice, and for all i know it could be fairly interesting, but there's a) weedout classes and b) discrete math. if it hadn't been five years since i'd taken a math class i'd be less worried about discrete, but as it is... i dunno. i'll figure it out later, i guess.
A little indiscretion...

Date: 2001-11-09 06:08 am (UTC)The current plan is to start work on a theatre minor, and possibly change it into a theatre major, depending on how things go. The real problem there is that twelve of the credits I need for a theatre major are lab-type classes, totaling twenty-four hours, making it likely that it would take that much longer to get the hell out of Dodge. Or Tech.
