Erin and I watched The Phantom Menace a couple nights ago.

The plot is a hot mess, the acting is wildly variable, the script needed someone with an ear for dialogue to go over it repeatedly ("You can write this shit, George, but you can't say it"), and the Gungans and Trade Federation are in fact deeply cringe-worthy.

But... I remember going to see it in theatres, dear god twenty years ago, and being so excited that it /looked/ like Star Wars. And it still does, in a way that the new movies just don't. The Destroyer droids are fantastic, and the basic battle-droids made me smile. ("Roger roger")

Not the worst way to spend an evening, as it turned out.

Nobody has ever accused George Lucas of being able to write good dialogue, even with the original trilogy, let's be fair.
