You'd never listened closely to it before, or the current socio-political climate has you thinking in a way that it hit home right now? Someone explained the song to me a long time ago, now it serves to remind me of a part of my genetic history that I'm not proud of.

I'd never listened closely. Hadn't had a chance, really, the only times I'd heard it were either in the car or at parties.
If I hadn't been reading Yeats a month or so ago it probably wouldn't have twigged, but hearing 'since 1916' made me sit up and take notice, so I went and dug up the lyrics.
As for history... *shrug* history's what you make of it. And it could be worse-- you could be English. :)
