I'm guessing it's CGDAE, so you can play both violin & viola parts on it. (Although apparently there are violins with a B string on top, which seems weird to me, but obviously someone wants one.)

Also there are alternate tunings for early or non-western music where you can use one of the strings as a drone, or tune them in thirds for a different range of double-stops.
