jazzfish: an open bottle of ether, and George conked out (Ether George)

Tired and headachey this morning (I have got to swap out that light bulb), so most all you get from me today is other people's stuff.

I did get the new Ted Chiang book in the mail yesterday, and devoured it in what I think is record time (for me): roughly an hour from "acquired new book" to "finished new book," and that's including time spent driving to the metro. It's good; I want to let it gel for a week and then reread it so I can get a better idea of what I want to say about it.

Translating the Verizon-Google Legislative Framework Proposal: "Users would have a wide variety of choices. For example, a user could choose to use the monopoly services we offer, or instead could choose to do things that don't require the Internet." --jeez, picking a pull quote for this was hard. Just read the whole thing. (See also Daring Fireball's Translation From Apple’s Unique Dialect of PR-Speak to English of the 'Letter From Apple Regarding iPhone 4')

20 Neil Gaiman facts: "5. Neil Gaiman once did the New York Times crossword puzzle in pen. In fifteen minutes. He won two Hugo awards for it."

Early Gangbanger Fiction: "Eager to achieve membership in one of the two gangs of armed thugs who between them terrorize the peaceful citizens of a great city, he challenges three of its respected members to fights to the death."

Eh -- it wasn't bad at points, but the Apple translation was a pretty accurate translation of what Apple was saying. Wheras the google/verizon translation was just a case study of taking whatever they said in the worst light -- which in some cases, was warranted; in others not so much.
