It's interesting how often some things seem to come up in fantasy books. An Iron Throne for example. Mercedes Lackey had one in the Eastern Empire. And why is the big bad empire always in the East? (LOTR, Sword of Truth, um, etc) I get that Eurocentric high fantasy tradition blah blah blah, but really it's getting old.

I think the 'evil empire in the east' thing is all Tolkien's fault, for perpetuating the "to the west is where the good stuff is" idea.

"Words are inadequate"
For my own curiosity, where did you pull it from?

It's from the story "Chromatic Aberration," by John M. Ford, available in his collection Heat of Fusion and other stories ("Heat of fusion and heat of dissociation differ only in degree, ha ha").

Words are inadequate (the poor craftsman curses his tools) to describe the loveliness of our coastal regions, but words are what I have available.

I read that in early August 2006, and stopped and reread it, and though "this man really is as brilliant as people say."

Less than two months later he was gone.
