The wall of water swept through at around 3:15 yesterday. We couldn't see ten feet out the windows at work.

I came home shortly after four and the lights in the hall was out. Unsurprisingly, so were the lights in the apartment.

I hadn't realized before how dependent my lifestyle is on electricity. No internet and no video gaming, obviously. Less obvious: no food. I didn't want to open the fridge, because it's a pretty good insulator and I'd rather not have to throw out everything if I can avoid it. The stove might have worked (it's gas; the starter might be electric but I'm not sure), but everything I'd want to cook except couscous involved stuff in the fridge or freezer. Even less obvious: no reading after about seven PM. I've got flashlights but they're a bit awkward, and the LED lantern that's great for not tripping over things is crap for distinguishing text.

So I spent a good deal of time on the phone, and then took a walk down to the park at the end of the subdivision. Still too warm and muggy to be a nice night, but a good walk nonetheless. I should go nightwalking more often.

The power was back when I woke up this morning. The ice cream in the freezer survived, so I assume the meat did as well. Things in the fridge await the smell test.

Your stove has an electric starter. That's the click-click-click noise you hear before the gas lights off.

ah yes. it's amazing how many little involve eletricity.

we have been without power now since sometime yesterday afternoon. it was still out when I left for work at 9:30am this morning. my biggest concern is that the building behind us has power as does the one acrosse the street. The next street down also has power. It appears that the only folks without power in our immediate are are the 9 row homes on the far side of the street and the 11 row homes on our side. I fear that our small numbers put our 20 homes VERY far down on the "Must Fix" list. we'll see. the longer it takes the more gluten-free food I loose since almost all of it must remain frozen to remain edible. rah!

other than that...how's your small furry, gerbil-like creature? (it is a gerbil, yes? and not a hamster?)

A world without electricity would indeed be a different place...

Of course for power outages that's what Disneyland and my DS are for. :)
