The wall of water swept through at around 3:15 yesterday. We couldn't see ten feet out the windows at work.

I came home shortly after four and the lights in the hall was out. Unsurprisingly, so were the lights in the apartment.

I hadn't realized before how dependent my lifestyle is on electricity. No internet and no video gaming, obviously. Less obvious: no food. I didn't want to open the fridge, because it's a pretty good insulator and I'd rather not have to throw out everything if I can avoid it. The stove might have worked (it's gas; the starter might be electric but I'm not sure), but everything I'd want to cook except couscous involved stuff in the fridge or freezer. Even less obvious: no reading after about seven PM. I've got flashlights but they're a bit awkward, and the LED lantern that's great for not tripping over things is crap for distinguishing text.

So I spent a good deal of time on the phone, and then took a walk down to the park at the end of the subdivision. Still too warm and muggy to be a nice night, but a good walk nonetheless. I should go nightwalking more often.

The power was back when I woke up this morning. The ice cream in the freezer survived, so I assume the meat did as well. Things in the fridge await the smell test.
