. . . I make a work-related post. Well, kind of. Yesterday was the documentation Team Outing. Scheduled plan: don't go ice skating because it's too warm; instead, see an IMAX movie, have lunch, and visit an exhibit at the Folger.
Since it's in DC, I experimented with riding the free shuttle from my apartment to the WFC metro and metroing in. I determined that if I catch the nine AM shuttle I can be at the Natural History museum in just under an hour. I also determined that if I start waiting for the shuttle at twenty-five minutes of nine, I can be at the Natural History museum in just under an hour and a half. Oops. At least I know what the shuttle schedule is now.
The seven of us met at the elephant and got tickets to see a movie about sharks. It turned out to be in 3D, and was exceptionally cool. Except for the swarm of jellyfish that drifted past my face. I kept trying to brush them out of the way (ineffective) or dodge them (disorienting, and equally ineffective, but probably hilarious to watch). Sharks and rays (which are sharks) and those neat saw-nosed sharks (which are rays, which are sharks), and turtles and dolphins and sea lions and a HUGE school of fish . . . o so impressive. Made me miss the one ocean-snorkeling trip I've ever taken, with the Boy Sprouts out to Key West well over a dozen years ago. I /did/ start to get fish-fatigue after half an hour or so (like at the Aquarium: "Yep, it's another fish. Oh look, another one") but still, very neat.
Then we discussed our options, decided that since a Zamboni had been sighted in the sculpture garden ice skating was still an option, and wandered down to the ice rink there. I ran out to a clothing store to purchase socks (I hadn't bothered to bring any, since I'd thought ice skating was a no-go). We skated for amounts of time varying between "not at all," "a couple of laps," and "forty-five minutes or so." I was pleased to be in the latter group. I've not been skating in, oh, at least eight years, and then only a few times. I was pleasantly surprised at how quickly I could remember the basics, and at my lack of falling over. It's fun. I should do that more often.
Lunch was at a place called the Capitol Brew Pub, or some such. It was alright. Probably would have been better if I'd had a beer other than "root." The crab dip was tasty.
Then we all went our separate ways. The shuttle wasn't due to start returning me to my apartment 'til four and it wasn't quite two-thirty yet, so I wandered towards Teaism. I planned to try a cup or two and sit around with my book for an hour, then catch the metro back. I got distracted by Landmark E Street, though. Ended up catching Unknown, a niftily psychological thriller about five guys who wake up with amnesia, locked into a warehouse. "I'm not a criminal!" "Then stop acting like one!" Recommended.
Overall, a Good Day, the sudden need for socks notwithstanding.
