ten years now.
Feb. 14th, 2006 10:06 amToday is Tuesday, February 14, the Feast of St. Valentine.
Today in history:
On February 14, 1929, gangsters acting on orders from Al Capone gunned down six rival gang members, and an optometrist in the wrong place at the wrong time, in what became known as the "St. Valentine's Day Massacre."
Peace.
Sometime last fall I started thinking about holy days, days or times that are somewhat sacred to me. Buy-Nothing Day (the day after Thanksgiving) is one, due to both a general distaste for crowds and traffic and a specific distaste for shopping in a crowd. Sunreturn is the day after the winter solstice, when it becomes evident that yes, the days are getting longer, and winter will end eventually; this, too, shall pass.
Valentine's, I suppose, is my third major holiday. My least favorite day of the year, stuck smack in the middle of my least favorite month. So it's a chance to unselfconsciously revel in misery, to feel good about being in a bad mood without taking it out on anyone else. Helps me through the end of winter. (Don't get me wrong-- I love snow. It's the dark that gets to me.)
Happy Day to you all, and remember: Dr. Reinhardt Schwimmer died for your sins. Or someone's.
