Hurrah for TNH / AoM / etc
Oct. 10th, 2003 10:58 am"Let us pause here to reflect that the invisible hand of the marketplace has no brain attached to it." --Teresa Nielsen Hayden, 2001-10-05
Teresa also gives us the stupidity of airline security and a distressing tale of middle-school bullying and finger-pointing. (Don't read the latter if you're feeling at all depressed. Seriously. Read about Angle-Grinder Man instead, or maybe how to make a book out of a paper bag.)
Sort of related to that second link, shunning hurts, quite literally. "Throughout history poets have written about the pain of a broken heart. . . . It seems that such poetic insights into the human condition are now supported by neurophysiological findings."
The Age of Mythology boardgame is rather neat. The description that immediately comes to mind is "Puerto Rico with an Axis and Alliies combat mechanic," but that's not quite right. The combat is a dicefest, but it's also a two-deep game of Rock-Paper-Scissors (mythical units kick the crap out of mortal units, heroes kick the crap out of mythical units, and there's a mortal unit that kicks the crap out of heroes; within each class there's another level of RPS going on, too). I like the combat. I'm not so happy with the PR aspects but I'm willing to believe that that's because I don't have such a good handle on them yet. I definitely want to play at least another couple of games.
Renfaire this Satyrday. (Come out and see us!) Probably a party in Maryland afterwards. And I'll be trying to go see the theatre dept's production of The Swan Sunday afternoon, since my attempt last night met with utter failure (sold-out show plus K not feeling well). Strike afterwards, which will be fun.
Today I have been useful. Made appointments with a counselor, a dentist, and Sears Optical. Go me.
My parents are selling the townhouse in Burke to buy a beach house in the Outer Banks. I am at a loss for words.

Date: 2003-10-10 09:34 am (UTC)I've been Norse twice. I feel like I've got a good handle on their terrain layout and their units, but not so much of a handle on the other races' units. I'd like to play as another race next time, I think. (Maybe Egypt. :)
