jazzfish: Owly, reading (Owly)
Past rush neutrinos like laughter in darkness
Lumbering nuclei, quanta of light;
Starwind is washing the shoals of the infinite,
All of the quarks are out dancing tonight.

--John M. Ford, "All Our Propagation: A Play for Instruments"

Thanks to Mr Duffy for the prompting: you're all invited to another Reading. Satyrday, December 8, at my place, starting at seven. Bring yourself and a piece or three to read aloud (last time we could easily have all done two or three had we been so inclined), or just bring yourself and soak up the atmosphere and conversation. I'll be providing tea and other beverages, and some form of munchies as well.

What to read? Individual pieces should be no longer than about fifteen minutes, and closer to ten is probably better. Choose something that you like, and that does well when read out loud. Read it through once, out loud, beforehand. This will give you an idea of how long it is (longer than you think), and also familiarize you with the unexpectedly weird words and phrases. For poetry, don't overemphasize the meter or line breaks but don't lose them either. Last time I read a lot of poems and stories by John M. Ford. I'm not sure what I'll be doing this time.

RSVP here, or to my LJ email, or in person, or not at all but then we're a lot less likely to wait for you before getting started. Hope to see and hear you there.

Friday night [livejournal.com profile] uilos and I got all dressed up and went out to Da Domenico for a /very/ tasty dinner, involving crab-with-a-C for her and gnocchi in a delicious four-cheese sauce for me. It's no Zeppolis (I suspect that the gnocchi and the fettucine alfredo are the only cream sauces they have) but it'll do.

Satyrday I pushed furniture around and then people came over and read things, and it was Good. You all /rock/. (Plus you showed sufficient admiration of my bookcases and contents therein.) I will definitely be doing this again at some point, perhaps towards the end of the summer.

(Anyone interested in additional pieces by Mr Ford should consult Jim Macdonald's carefully compiled list of Occasional Works in eight parts. Warning: may induce uncontrolled hysterical laughter.)

A set list )

Now that I've caught my breath and gotten my bearings back, it's time to do some actual planning. Satyrday, April 28, at my place, starting at seven, I'm hosting a Reading. Bring yourself and something (or perhaps several somethings) to read aloud, that you expect other people to enjoy. Or just bring yourself and soak up the atmosphere and conversation.

I can provide tea and various cola-based beverages, and some variety of munchies as well. Should you desire alcohol, I'm afraid you'll need to supply your own, though it's perfectly welcome.

What to read? Individual pieces preferably no longer than about fifteen minutes, and closer to ten is probably better. Read it through once, out loud, beforehand. This will give you an idea of how long it is (longer than you think), and also familiarize you with the unexpectedly weird words and phrases. I'll be reading mostly John M. Ford; definitely a trimmed-down version of "All Our Propagation" and probably another poem or three as well. (Be forewarned: I may attempt to draft others present into reading, or singing, bits of "A Little Scene to Monarchize.")

RSVP here, or to my LJ email, or in person, or not at all but then we're a lot less likely to wait for you before getting started. Hope to see and hear you there.
