Jan. 23rd, 2002 09:46 amSat down and watched the old Rankin/Bass animated film of The Hobbit last night. It's still enjoyable, although not nearly as good as I remember it being. *shrug* Thorin's voice is absolutely perfect, and in the midst of all the choppy script cuts needed to make it fit into 78 minutes (!) they actually did one thing very right: introducing Bard the Bowman when the dwarves first arrive in Esgaroth.
Plus they had Germanic Elves, which was kind of neat.
The songs were very cool, although all of them except "Roads go ever ever on" and "The Greatest Adventure" were far too short (those two, as sung by Glenn Yarborough, started to grate on my nerves. A lot). If Peter Jackson actually turns The Hobbit into a film, I hope he'll at least consider trying to get rights to the music they used.
Question: why did Balin get to go be lord in Moria? Answer: because he was the only dwarf other than Thorin Oakenshield to have anything resembling a distinctive personality.
Emily has a job. It's not a real job (20-30 hrs/week until the middle of April), in the sense that we can't go try and get a loan with it, but it's a start.
