honestly democracy is so young, and so is modern global capitalism. For that matter so is the industrial world, and the modern nation state. I know that's a lot of kind of insipid obvious statements, but mostly it's just a critique of Francis Fukuyama. We don't have any evidence that democracy is a state that can survive stably for very long, I guess.

Which is not to say we're doomed or we shouldn't keep fighting. But also I think "whatever we have after this is all over will be unrecognizable" is inarguable. We might get better, we're likely to get worse, we might go off to the side -- but we'll never be the Warren Court's america ever again.
