Heh. That would make for quite the game!

The distance is very clearly a deliberate choice by Pope. His previous game, Papers Please, cast you in the role of a bureaucrat verifying passports. Basic pattern-matching, "look for these aspects of the paperwork". But within that you had lots of little choices to make that influenced the direction of the story, who to let through or deny, etc etc. I'm glad he tried out the 'more distanced character' approach here, just to see how something different would work, even if I wasn't completely happy with the results.

(If you're into that sort of 'pay attention to everything' I do recommend Obra Dinn! Papers Please has a bit lower barrier to entry and is I think less fun as a game, but it's a more compelling story.)
