It's not sticking well in my mind, so I am certainly inclined to agree with you. Some of it feels like a dry run for things he did better in the Commonweal (the Uncleftish-Beholding-esque discussion of atomic physics early on, for instance). And yeah, the pacing is difficult. I found that to be the case with The March North first time I read it, too; I liked it better the second time. That might well be the case here but I do not see myself rereading it.

(Stalled out on Chapter 75, which I believe is shortly after they fight their way into a city/castle that's been serving what I think was the Big Bad. I am reading slowly enough that I am losing details /as I read/.)
