I'd be reluctant to take a bike without gears, myself: hills are even worse than I'd thought they would be. But yeah, I would expect there to be better handbrake options. :)

Good luck with being carfree! As far as car co-ops go, I would also sing the praises of car2go, which does appear to be in Toronto. (That's where you are, right?)
