Back in the early 2000's, when I was commuting from IAD to YYC (Calgary) with United, I had my choice of connecting airports. Did I want to miss my connection (Ottowa), have my luggage miss my connection (Denver), have my connecting flight delayed/canceled (Chicago), or have a five-hour layover (Detroit)? I started regularly opting to have my luggage miss my connection. It got to the point that the YYC baggage claim people just pulled out the claim form when they saw me walking up, and United started automatically bumping me up to business class for the return flight.

Because this was a Known Issue (tm) for me, by the second time, I always had what I needed for a day's worth of life before my bag arrived.
