Yeah, getting a fully-enclosed box with a lid seems to have solved the problem. Now we're left with where to put the thing: we were putting the old box under the second-bathroom sink, but the old box was the largest possible that would fit and was still pretty small. At least there's no more cleaning up of cat pee.
