Happy fourth annual International Eat Some Cake Day! Although the first one wasn't international. Whatever.

Sunday's cold seems to have been a twenty-four-hour affair. I was mostly back to full functionality (as full as I get these days anyway) by Monday.

In other news, I misinterpreted Dad's email about Grandmother, and then he turns out to have been overly optimistic anyway. She's just been moved to hospice with congestive heart failure, and is more or less nonresponsive. So I'll most likely be flying to Memphis and thence to Jonesboro or Hoxie this weekend, and spending the week in Arkansas.

As I recall, the last time I did this I was having a relationship meltdown. That seems much less likely this time. Small favors.

... and there's Dad's phone call. She's gone as of a few minutes ago. So it goes.

(I am pretty much okay. As I told my boss, one side effect of an Army brat upbringing is that extended family is only about two steps removed from 'strangers.')

I'm sorry for your loss - be sure to take care of yourself before, during,¹ and after the trip. As one who has made the journey recently, self care² is one of the first things to get tossed out the window.

heh. I have no idea what the accomodations will be like but I am prepared to shell out for a hotel if need be. I'm only there for a few days at least.

While I love my brother and sister-in-law, being out there and living in their home (which used to be my mother's home) for the week I was there around my mother's death was one of the more stressful parts of the trip. When we went back for the funeral, a hotel room was my needed quiet sanctuary.

I'm sorry to hear about your Grandma. My grandfather died several years ago after many alienating years of Alzheimer's. I was sad, because my mother and grandmother and aunt were sad, but I wasn't close enough to him to really feel it deeply myself, which felt a bit odd. But it served as a good rehearsal for the mundane details of dealing with death for when my Dad died. I hope the trip is useful to you somehow, and that nobody does anything terrible.
