The thing about running is that I can see improvement on a week-to-week basis. I mean, what I mostly see is how I'm not there yet and taking forever to get there, but that's why I keep a log. I can look back and say that yeah, I'm getting somewhere. Where 'somewhere' is defined as 'running 5k [three miles plus a bit] in 37 minutes, including a two-minute walk at about the 25-minute mark, after four months of getting out at least twice a week.'

According to the couch-to-5k plan I ought to have been running the full 5k in thirty minutes by last month sometime. I blame my factory-second lungs.

On the other hand, where I'm at now would have been completely impossible four months ago, or even one month ago.

It's trite and cliche to say 'everybody's got their own pace for improvement' and 'keep going you'll get there.' Those never meant anything to me. Anything I couldn't do right the first time was a source of scorn: come on, you're smarter than that, etc.

It's nice to have something that I'm a) awful at, b) allowed to be awful at, and c) less awful at than I used to be.

Wisdom from Twitter, original sources sadly misplaced:
  • Whenever God closes a door, he opens a window. Because God doesn't really understand how doors work.
  • Ten years ago we had Steve Jobs, Johnny Cash, and Bob Hope. Then everything changed when the Fire Nation attacked.
  • It never gets any easier. You just get more data points for how well you can stick with it.

101 in 1001 update (the list)

Completed:
25) See a play that I'm entirely unfamiliar with, including playwright and cast & crew. 2013-07-19, The Farnsworth Invention (I have heard the name 'Aaron Sorkin' but have never been exposed to anything he's done, except for 'A Few Good Men' and I didn't realise that was him until after the play)
56) Go running or swimming three times a week for a month. 2013-06-28
72) Deliver unwanted RPGs to a good home. 2013-07-20, in three large trades.
73) Purge the dresser and the clothes closet. 2013-06-24, though very little went.

In progress:

36) Write, revise, & submit story #4. I've a direction, and a couple hundred words down.
47) Play or purge all the unplayed boardgames in my collection, except for Italia. (8/13) Played Bridges of Shangri-La, a strange area-majority-type game.
59) Run 5 km without stopping to walk. One walk, at about 3.5 km, for two minutes.
60) Run 5 km in 25 minutes. 36:21
70) Dispose of unwanted comics. Transmetropolitan is gone in a trade.
71) Dispose of unwanted games. A few more gone in trades.
78) Stay under budget on discretionary purchases for six months. 'Consecutive'. 3/6, assuming I don't go on a spending binge in the next thirty-six hours.
90) Read or purge everything currently on the To Be Read shelf. (11/25) Purged Alice in Sunderland by Bryan Talbot. Reading Hope Dies Last by Studs Terkel.
92) Reread the oeuvre of John M. Ford. (2/13) Reread The Dragon Waiting.
99) Give blood four times in a year. (3/4) 2013-07-17
