Here begins finch's 21 Days of Dreamwidth meme (original post). I'm not limiting my content to DW, for reasons to be explored later this week; but I'm happy to do a bit of awareness-raising, and also to have an excuse to post something each day for the last three weeks I'm at my workplace.

1. Why did you sign up for Dreamwidth?

Because jadelennox was pretty enthused about it in April '09 and was kind enough to give me an invite code. Which, yay. I bought a seed account because I could, and because I like supporting good fledgling creative endeavors; I actually started using DW last summer after LJ's questionable decisions became sufficiently questionable as to affect me too.

On Friday uilos and I had a shockingly nice drive through the rain. Traffic was horrid on all roads ending in "95" so we took 66 into the District and then drove along Rock Creek Parkway / Beach Drive. I've missed watching a good solid rainstorm in a forest. Plus the various bridges along and over Rock Creek Parkway tend to be exactly the kind of architecture I like to see: either big swooping arches, or simple stone structures that look like they belong.

thanate had a fine dinner waiting for us when we got there, and there was plenty of good conversation to be had as well. Then we came home and crashed.

Satyrday we Discussed, and went to the last ABG before departure; Sunday was Easter luncheon with my family (as thrilling as you expect, although the cherry pie was good) and then a very slow relaxing afternoon/evening.

I'm a little surprised by how ready to face this week I feel.

"Satyrday": Reference to Steven Bauer, to satyrs in general, or something else? (I note that under no standard mythology, history, or revision (that i could readily find) is it derived from satyrs.)

I originally nicked it many years ago from The Satyrday Evening Post, a newspaper in George Alec Effinger's The Zork Chronicles. It amuses me. (Both the book and the usage.)

Also, I created a DW account on 4/10/09--just over two years ago--because it seemed like they were (and still are) heading in great directions, making all kinds of positive changes that LJ has yet to implement (whether they're planning to or not.) I've never posted anything there, though, and http://skreidle.dreamwidth.org/read isn't on my regular list of tabs--probably because almost everything there is a cross-post to or from LJ. :)

I'm not sure whether there will ever actually be a tipping point where DW suddenly becomes The Place To Be. I'm starting to suspect that casual long-form blogging is losing the battle to Twitter and Facebook. I regret this; I made several good friends on LJ, and I'm not really wired for that kind of interaction over Twitter (and FB requires a real-life connection, at least for me).

I know of a good dozen other sites based on LJ's codebase, but LJ's the only one with tens of millions of users.

I do share mostly the same links on LJ and FB--and while I have a Twitter account, I almost never use it--but if I have more to say, that stays on LJ. I don't expect that anything I post on FB is necessarily read by the bulk of people who have access to it; on LJ, I have a reasonable expectation that most of my LJfriends will see it. (I do personally know 90+% of my FB friends, but it's still a shallower connection.)

I love Beach Drive! I take it whenever I can. There are also some smaller, windier roads in there, like Ross Drive, where I can't imagine how they would extract you if you broke down.

Honestly, Beach Drive makes me even happier than the B-W Parkway. I may have to start taking Beach when I go out to Maryland on Mondays. (But only because I'm pretty sure my car isn't going to break down anytime soon.)
