jazzfish: artist painting a bird, looking at an egg for reference (Clairvoyance)
From: [personal profile] jazzfish
Here we get deep into the "What is art (art) (baby don't hurt me, don't hurt me, no more)" problem. I tend towards the idea that math equations (for instance) can be art objects in the same way as landscapes: by being decreed to be artistic by a human agent. This reduces to 'art is what anyone says it is,' which has its own problems, but they're more easily surmountable than the idea that there's no inherent artistic worth in (to take the obvious example) the Mandelbrot set.
