If you're worried that you might not like Babylon 5, I'd recommend following the advice of several Making Light commenters and skip the first season - watch it after you've seen the whole thing.

As for Battlestar Galactica, I STRONGLY recommend reading the TWOP recaps after each episode, and skipping the finale.
