blatant rip-off
Jun. 21st, 2001 10:59 amSo I'm rereading _The Sword of Shannara_, because it's been ages since I read it. "It's been a long time since X" is rarely a good reason to do X, and this isn't much of an exception.
The book is the most blatant Tolkien rip-off I've ever read in my life. The wizard Gandalf (excuse me-- Allanon) shows up in Hobbiton/Shady Vale to tell the Valemen/Hobbits that they need to run away before evil overtakes them. Then a Nazgul/Skull Bearer shows up, and they have to Run Away Fast. They get lost in the Old Forest/Black Oaks, encounter a Barrow-Wight/Mist Wraith, meet up with a companion who has the blood of kings named Aragorn/Menion Leah, and eventually get to Rivendell/Culhaven.
On the other hand, it's keeping me amused. As I recall, it only gets worse from here.
