There was at least one voter (in his early 20s, I think) who I sold on using the paper ballot by telling him that he got to be subversive and use a pen.

There were also at least two or three people who came back and asked if it was ok not to use a pencil. And at least one ballot where someone used their own pencil. According to the training notes, so long as you don't use red pen, and fill in the oval at least 16 percent, the scanner will be happy with you.
