Things that deserve their own post but probably won't get one:
Supposing I were to throw another reading, and it were to be on either the first or the eighth of December. Interested? Coming? One date better than the other for you?
- Girlyman at Jammin' Java
- Reconnecting with
zaph after twelve years
- Dar Williams at the Birchmere (she played the fish song! And also two new songs, and uttered the words "working on my seventh studio album")
- Gingerbread pancakes (sogood but very very thick)
- Salmon melts (like tuna melts but with tasty salmons instead)
- Still having close to $100 worth of credit at Richard McKay, after spending several hours there with
uilos
- The first few episodes of Due South, with Paul "Geoffrey Tenant" Gross ("That's the last time he fishes over the limit!")
- Richard Shindell at Jammin' Java, followed by dessert at Amphora, with
elf
- Getting stretches from
ancientsong to correct the tightness and hurting I've had in my shoulder for, oh, months now

Where is there a Richard MCKay around here?

Date: 2007-11-13 06:26 pm (UTC)There used to be one at 29 and 28 in Virginia but it closed shortly before I moved here. Dammit.

Date: 2007-11-13 06:13 pm (UTC)Second, wahhhh, I can't make either of those dates for a reading. Someday I will, I promise but December is a really big gig month so I'm busy pretty much every day/evening of every weekend.
As for Dar, did she sing the christians and the pagans? I LOVE that song and am sorry that I missed her.

Date: 2007-11-13 07:36 pm (UTC)On a note more related to the first bit, I have some random free iTunes stuff, and I was thinking about maybe getting some Dar Williams stuff w/ it. My favorite things I've heard by her so far are probably "That Was Pompeii", "Wilder Than Her", "As Cool As I Am", "February", in roughly that order. Any recommendations, either in terms of other songs, or albums (eg, "Mortal City" vs that live album vs "What Do You Hear In These Sounds" vs something else)?

Date: 2007-11-13 08:24 pm (UTC)Based on your list, though, I'd go for _Mortal City_ or _The Honesty Room_. (Whole albums over individual songs.) _Honesty Room_ is uneven but has some works of utter brilliance ("Mark Rothko Song," "I Love, I Love"); "Mortal City" is almost entirely Really Good.
All her albums are quite good. Except for "My Better Self" which is only pretty good. (But it does have a cover of "Comfortably Numb.") My current absolute favorite Dar song is "Mercy of the Fallen," followed by "Mark Rothko Song" and "Spring Street" and oh, about 90% of them.
Time to go home and put All Dar on shuffle.
