Time is fungible (lunchtime doubly so). I was arguing today to a group of programmers (who have been trying to patch everything and generally make this whole nationwide clock-discombobulation happen) that we should switch to everyone in the world using GMT.

No daylight savings time. No time zones or weirdo special-cases (I'm looking at you, Indianapolis). One planet, one time. It would be easier to switch to universal 24-hour time while we're at it.

By the way, apparently if this doesn't magically save energy, we're going to switch back next year. Fuckers!

Weird half-hour breaks are, in fact, teh dumb. Time zones aren't so bad; they provide for weird edge cases, but they have the advantage of keeping everyone sort of on a "sunrise at 6:30, sunset at 6:30" internal schedule.

With you on the desire for 24-hour time, though.
