On the cooking front: my new favorite cooking activity is:
Step 1: look in the fridge and see what desperately needs to get used before it goes bad.
Step 2: plug said ingredients into Google.
Step 3: make what comes up that doesn't require going to the grocery store.

I've found some very successful recipies this way.
