A weekend and a bit
Jun. 27th, 2006 11:41 amMy last day at $job{previous} was uneventful, though busy.
sir_alf is taking over for me in the testing department, so Friday was spent performing a fast and abbreviated knowledge-dump, while trying to get my cube cleaned out and make sure I didn't miss anything. I expect he'll do fine; it'll just take him a bit to get up to speed on everything.
After that I loaded up Straylight and hit the road, driving straight into the start of the worst rainstorm I've seen in months. (I think the only time I've driven this car in worse conditions was when I bought it a year and a half ago, and it rained all the way south from Harrisonburg.) Bought my last 'cheap' tank of gas in Front Royal, where it's still in the $2.70 range.
Satyrday
uilos and I had breakfast at The Original Pancake House (very tasty) and then drove down to Falls Church to look at what I figured were the two most likely apartments. The first one (the one at the Commons) was quite nice, though a bit pricey and also way more space than I really need. Then we swung through Tyson's to see how long a walk it would actually be to get to work (under two miles by road; less if I can cut through the mall), and cruised down Route 7 through downtown Falls Church to Bailey's.
Falls Church has an awful lot of Zunocos ("Wee covir the werld"), but I didn't see any Kentucki Fried Lizzard Partes. I did, however, see another Original Pancake House. Somebody's lying.
The apartment at Bailey's was far away (probably a forty-five minute commute, maybe more), small, and looked old and kinda run-down. But it was on the top floor and cheap, and not a bad place at all. So on the way back we discussed which of these options (save money, or save stress) was better, and came to only vague conclusions.
During the last week in May there was a big lightning storm on the Outer Banks. Lightning actually hit my parents' house, and fried three televisions, among other things. ("Weren't there surge protectors?" "Yeah. It came in through the coax. I've got surge protectors for that too, now.") So on Sunday I got up at quarter of five to make the trip down to Corolla with Dad, three large televisions, and a rented SUV. A decent trip; we talked a bit, and I felt generally a little less useless than usual.
The rain of doom started up again as we passed Fredericksburg on the way back, and my understanding is that it still hasn't really let up. Yeesh.
And Monday I went ahead and applied with the Commons (and my credit check came back good enough that I have no security deposit), and today I'll be packing for Origins, for which I leave tomorrow. Still unsure what I'll be doing for the Fourth. I'll figure something out.
