I thought Hartnett being not-so-gritty actually added to the story. The opening sequence really sets the mood for the rest of the film.

. . . eh. A bit too much color too soon, a bit too much sweetness up until the gunshot. (This is by no means 'I disliked it,' rather 'I felt it could have been even more effective.') The too-much-color was also a problem I had with Tarantino's sequence (Dwight and Jackie Boy in the car); I think it comes of in both cases being the directors' first experience with the effect and wanting to play around.

Killing Time: I have not heard of this thing, though it sounds intriguing.
