breaking radio silence
Dec. 13th, 2004 10:41 pmWill post more when classwork is done [this consists of finishing one more paper for HoDaT and revising two plays for Playwriting]. At that point I'll do things like answer the questions from
platypusgirl that have been sitting in my inbox for, oh, at least a month now, recording for posterity the trip to Helena [including a jury-rigged turkey fryer], and bitching some more about design lab. [Short answer for
laughin: we weren't designing for a specific play. At least, not one we'd read the script for. We were designing based on some vague generalities and a poem about a play. Next semester they start trusting us with actual, y'know, scripts.]
I caught a brief glimpse of the Earthsea miniseries a few minutes ago. Looks quite twitch-worthy. Though Danny Glover looks alright, at least. (Didn't get to hear him talk at all.) Ms. Le Guin has her own opinion on the matter, as well. [thanks
nixve for the link]
I've been sort of pondering what a good movie of Wizard of Earthsea would be like for a long time. It's not even all that hard. You turn Vetch into a girl and you're three-quarters of the way there: you get the love interest (which doesn't even have to be at all consummated), you get equal rights at the School on Roke, and as a free bonus you get some focus to the Jasper / Ged conflict. (You break a lot of things that come out in later books but I consider those a necessary casualty of 21st-century audience appeal. Cf. Arwen Undomiel.) Put in some kind of resolution for Jasper [send him to serve the Terrenon, maybe?] and expand just a touch on the wrap-up, and it's good. No need to change the climax: the people who Get It will Get It and think it's a great movie, and some of those who don't will watch it again and maybe Get It that time. (Heck, have Ogion do some explaining in the wrap-up if you have to.) Leave the arm-ring to tie into the inevitable sequel. Totally doable, maybe even in under three hours. *sigh*
