SF Novel: "I've been a fan of Banks since his first book, 'Non-genre novel.'"

Back in the day, Mazda did a couple of brilliant commercials incorporating The Nails's classic "88 Lines About 44 Women." Volkswagon's "Da Da Da" and "Mr. Roboto" ads were likewise brilliant. Now Audi's getting in on the act with their mash-up of David Bowie's "Rebel Rebel" and "Never Get Old." Plus, they're giving away a free car to the person who does the best mash-up of a db track off Reality and an older db track. Details here, plus a small .mov of the commercial. (The mash-up is pretty good.)

Saw Shaft in Africa last night for geography, since I didn't feel like going to fiction class. Came home and went through several high-emotion conversations, culminating in a meltdown around one. I'm better now, though; I've taken action on a couple of the things that were bothering me, and I've slept on the rest. Big thanks to Jonathan who may or not have realised it and [livejournal.com profile] nixve who certainly did.

From a letter to my parents, written last night and slightly edited for style:

I'm most likely not going to Switzerland. I'd have to take twenty hours in the fall, which is an awful lot, and $10K is quite literally more money than I can wrap my head around. I live my life in two-digit dollar amounts. Three digit amounts feel like a lot, but they're still basically comprehensible. Four digit amounts are so high as to be not really relevant to me, and so when we get to "this semester abroad will cost roughly ten thousand dollars, and by the way bring another $2K pocket money" you might as well be talking about a gajillion, because that's how much sense the number makes to me. "I'm in debt around $10,000 to my parents." "By the time I finish school I'll owe about $30,000 in student loans." It's all gibberish. It's more money than I've ever seen in one place, it's an order of magnitude more money than I made last year.

That plus general feelings of stagnation and uselessness and yeah. Like I said, I'm okay now, though. Just beat.
