Playing catchup as usual
Sep. 22nd, 2003 11:46 pmEscher's 'Relativity' in LEGO. Far too cool for words. (Their "Ascending and Descending" is also very cool; the rest are ambitious but don't quite do it for me. But then I never liked "Waterfall" anyway.)
Having seen Underworld I don't really think White Wolf has a leg to stand on. I can't speak for Nancy Collins, having not read her story, but the idea that THEY invented angsty vampires in a run-down city and NO ONE ELSE gets to play with them is ridiculous. The mythos is entirely non-WoD, and the only points from the suit I can recall offhand (the use of "abomination" to describe a wolf/leech hybrid, which is used only by an elder vampire who regards lycans as abominable anyway, and the word "bloodline" to denote clan-like groupings which have NO BEARING on the plot) are trivially dispensed with.
Right, the movie itself. *shrug* It was a waste of neither my time nor my money. It was fun. It had a plot, and even occasionally had some acting. I was underwhelmed by the action scenes; both Robert Rodriguez and John Woo (and even the Wachowski brothers) give more heart to their massive battles. Mostly this is yet another triumph of Style over Substance.
Endless Nights. Migod. Anyone with any interest in Sandman whatsoever should get this. Like, now. Excellent writing, gorgeous art (finally, art worthy of Sandman). Delight shows up in one of the stories. Very cool.
Also picked up my back issues of comics. Still not caught up on Hellblazer, although I'm getting there. And 100 Bullets had its requisite "Holy shit" moments at the end of two of the five issues I picked up. (Will [CHARACTER X] just bloody DIE and make us all happier?!? Please?) 100 Bullets trades are really being pumped out, too. . . the comic is only about four issues ahead of the trades.
Got Z started reading Transmetropolitan. I think he's amused. "The Church of the Holy Trepanation is a licensed evangelical religion! You know what that means? It means I can drill a hole in your head and say I'm doing it to save your soul!"
After movie K, E, Z, Markush, Patrick, and I went to Fridays for food and nigh-orgasmic vanillabean cheesecake. Then off to gothinabox to look for Halloween stuff for K. I can confirm
idoru's assertion that gothinabox is, in fact, secretly CARE BEAR WAREHOUSE. Scary. Then we wandered home and (minus Z) watched The Usual Suspects. I find new things in that movie every time I see it. So good.
Sunday. . . um. Work, mostly. Reading. Today was class and oil-change so that Glyndwr would stop its death rattle. Which is a good thing.
Slacking on entries like this means I miss some of the cooler things I've done or seen, like the tiny kitten that Kai saved us from, or my thoughts on Angels in America (short form: very cool, everyone should read/see this). I need to keep up better. But not tonight. Tonight I sleep.
