HOWTO: Be a homeopathic bioterrorist: "Q: How does diluting something make it more powerful? A: Because some guy in the eighteenth century decided it does."

Milliways: Infocom's Unreleased Sequel to Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: omg omg omg. (More for the history than for the semi-playable pre-alpha files.)

The impact of arbitrary institutional decisions . . .: in which most of the best baseball players are born in August, and most of the worst in July. (With good reason.) Fascinating stuff. Read the comments, too, most particularly Matt Weiner's.

Had a delightful tromp around Roosevelt Island with [livejournal.com profile] uilos and [livejournal.com profile] elf yesterday. Picnicked near the river and watched the end of a crew meet. Got to see a great blue heron, a pileated woodpecker or two (may have been the same one. Having caught a glimpse of one in flight I can easily understand how people might conceivably mistake them for ivory-billeds), and a good-sized snapping turtle with a head shaped like a shovel. Plus skinks and cedar knees, and an awful lot of blackbirds scuffling in the leaves. Quite neat. It's not much of a "hike," but as pleasant nature walks go it's a very good one.

Good thing we went out yesterday when it was eighty-three and sunny. Today the rain's been alternately pouring and drizzling since I woke up at around eightish. I have a pot of tea and towels that are nearly done in the dryer, and this evening I shall make more cookies. It's a good day to stay inside and pretend to be domestic.
