Velvet Goldmine: an interview with John Cale: "Cale once wrote: 'I've no business in rock 'n'roll. I've said it over and over, I'm a classical composer, I'm not a rock'n'roll musician -- I'd love to conduct a Brahms or Mahler cycle.' He gives a little shrug when this is quoted back at him, adding: 'I love rock'n'roll.'"

Dividend Voodoo: "Proponents of cutting tax rates on dividends argue that the move will stimulate the economy. A large amount of stimulus, of course, should already be on the way from the huge and growing deficit the government is now running."

Bill Clinton meets Hunter S. Thompson: "And then he turned to Hunter Thompson, of all people, and said with wholehearted fervor, 'We're going to put one hundred thousand new police officers on the street.' I was up all night persuading Hunter that this was not a personal threat." [from [livejournal.com profile] zerblinitzky]

Friday was basically irrelevant, except that I worked that evening, and then raced monkeys with E, Z, and Patrick afterwards. Satyrday was Game Day. Very cool; one of the better Game Days I've been to in awhile. Played five good games of Werewolf and won all of them, three as a wolf. (Yay me!) Also played some War & Sheep (cool), Starbase Jeff (ehh), and Medici (excellent game, but the graphic design on the English version is hideous).

Also played two games of Puerto Rico, in which I tried out a strategy involving getting a factory (which rewards you for diversifying your production) early and then loading up on buildings. Lost the first game by two points; won the second by twenty or so. Curiously, I don't really feel like I've got a handle on the game as a whole, like I do with (say) Settlers; rather, I've got a handle on this one strategy. I don't know what I'd do if it failed to come off in a game (like, say, if I didn't manage to get a factory). Looked closely at the rules, some posts to rec.games.board, and finally a different translation of the rules, and determined that I'd been playing two buildings (Hospice and University) wrong. (The extra dude you get from these buildings goes on the plantation / building, and not on the Hospice or University. This makes the University almost worth the money, and the Hospice even more underpriced.)

Today, after a less than pleasant morning, E & I wandered around Pandapas for a bit. Very few rhododendrons were blooming, sadly. But the streams were cool, of course, and there were several shades of red/orange azaleas. Also grass with weird seedpod or flowerbuds with eight points (like an octahedron), and cicada skins on tree leaves. Good wandering. Then to work, to watch the inventory people come in and scan all the books in the store and follow behind them and check them and clean up after them. There was chicken alfredo pizza, though, and I didn't have to sell stupid Preferred Reader cards. So it was all good.

I have laundered. That is my sole accomplishment for today. Tomorrow I will work on more boxes, because it's one of Tech's four holidays.
