it's a survey. it seems to be going around LJ. And I'm inspired, and using Emily's puter because she's asleep in my room.
So, without further ado...

1. What was the first record you ever owned (bought for you)?

Dandy-Lions Never Roar. An album of cute children's songs. I can probably still remember all the lyrics.

2. What was the first record you ever bought?

A tape by the country band Alabama, and thank you so much for bringing up such a painful subject. While you're at it, why don't you... etc.

3. If you had someone of the opposite sex coming over and wanted to impress them, which cds would you hide?

Tubthumping by Chumbawamba. (I'd almost forgotten I still have it.)

4. Is there a song that reminds you most of your childhood?

"Candle on the Water" from Pete's Dragon, because that was one of the ten or so movies we had on videotape until I was in about third grade.

5. If you could spend a night with five musical artists - three for their minds and two for their bodies - who woud they be?

Mind: Chrissie Hynde (from The Pretenders), Tori Amos, Loreena McKennitt.
Body: Sarah McLachlan (before she cut her hair), Joanne Catherall (from The Human League),

6. If your life was a movie, what song would play over the following?
Opening credits: "Some Days Are Better Than Others" by U2
Love scenes: "She Is Dancing" by Brian Kelly
Closing credits: "Once In a Lifetime" by Talking Heads

7. If applicable, name a song or concert that moved you to tears...

The Two Trees by Loreena McKennitt. (You know who you are.) Doubtless there were others during high school, but that's the only one that sticks with me.

8. What do you listen to when you are...

Happy: um. Happy boppy eighties music, mostly.
Sad: August and Everything After by Counting Crows, "Iris" by Goo Goo Dolls, Duncan Sheik, "Broken Phone Booth" by Primitive Radio Gods
Disillusioned or disenchanted: the final cut by Pink Floyd
Angry: The Wall by Pink Floyd, Pretty Hate Machine by Nine Inch Nails

9. Name one musical artist you would like to see banished.

Most of the teenyboppers that get played on 92.3.

10. Name one musical genre you would like to see banished.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say 'rap' and eagerly await the flames for a) not recognising that 'rap' is many different styles and b) dismissing them all as crap.

11. Name a song you would rather never hear again.

Just one? :) That horrible song that sampled "Jack and Diane," then.

12. What now-defunct band would you most like to see reunite (living or dead)?

I'd say the Velvet Underground or Pink Floyd, but both Lou Reed and Roger Waters are washed up. Probably The Hollow Men, who put out two hard-to-find albums and then split.

13. Name an album that is perfect all the way through - no filler, no bad stuff.

Songs For Drella by Lou Reed and John Cale.

14. Music you like that could be considered a guilty pleasure...

None, really. Maybe Weird Al.

15. If your music collection was about to go up in flames, which five cds would you save?

Songs for Drella (Lou Reed and John Cale)
The Joshua Tree (U2)
The Dark Side of the Moon (Pink Floyd)
Shag Tobacco (Gavin Friday)
and either FTE or Rarities by Sarah McLachlan

16. Is there a song that describes you or a situation you've been in so well that you could have written it?

"Allison Road" by the Gin Blossoms. At least I thought so at the time. "Hey Jealousy" goes in there, too.

17. Which underrated artist deserves more attention?

As everyone who hangs out with me knows, that would be John Cale and Gavin Friday. Although Warren Zevon ought to get more airplay too.

18. Has a song or artist changed your life in any way? If so, how?

Not really, except for my discovery that everything relates to Andy Warhol after getting the Basquiat soundtrack.

19. What is your favorite soundtrack?

Basquiat for 'songs' and The Usual Suspects for score.

20. Best music-related movie...

Empire Records, hands down.
"Why'd you glue these quarters to the floor?"
"I don't feel the need to explain my art to you, Warren."

21. What would your dream band be?

John Cale on vocals and viola. David Gilmour on lead guitar. Moe Tucker on drums. David Bowie also on vocals. Dunno who I'd want for bass guitar. Maybe me. :)

22. Do you miss the days when mtv used to, like, show videos and stuff?

Not really, since I don't actually watch TV and never watched MTV anyway.

23. What is your favorite all-time video?

Don't Come Around Here No More by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. The Alice video. It's _so_ cool.

24. Current favorite radio hit...

Bah. I have no use for radio. Or for most current music.
Probably the song with the chorus "If I go crazy then / Will you still call me Superman."

25. What is the best artist/group of all time?

Going against my principles here, but for sheer volume of incredibly good stuff it's got to be Pink Floyd.

go and be enlightened.
