like paper in the wind
May. 25th, 2026 08:17 amThe case of the 500-mile email: "We can't send [e-]mail more than 500 miles." I was reminded yesterday that this exists and am the happier for it.
Two Slice: "A font that's only 2px tall, and somewhat readable!" 'Somewhat' is doing a decent amount of work there; I suspect enough letters are distinctive that your brain can fill in the missing ones from context. Still, impressive.
Clues By Sam, a daily logic puzzle. Starts easy on Monday, gets gradually harder over the course of the week. Been doing these for awhile now. It's nice to start my morning with a tiny dopamine jolt.
Let's see.
A week ago Saturday was taken up with dog-related shenanigans about which the less said the better. Suffice to say that a seven-month tornjak puppy has been successfully shipped from Van to Prince George and is settling in with Erin, and all's well that etc.
The new puppy is rail-thin and energetic, but still has some of Avallu's gravitas and politesse. I'm glad I got to meet him. I'm glad I could help get him to someplace where he'll be happy, and where he'll be deeply loved and vice versa. I still don't particularly want to deal with "puppy" on a long-term basis.
Forgot to mention that Mr Tuppert was apparently a minor terror to potential condo-buyers while I was gone. So now whenever anyone wants to see the condo he goes in the box and we sit outside for a while. He has only himself to blame for this turn of events.
I got him a cat harness & leash awhile ago. He is decidedly Not a fan of the harness; when it's clipped round his belly he prefers to sink into the ground, and will mostly move by slinking. I'm trying it out for a little bit every day and giving him plenty of treats, and he'll usually walk a few steps to get them. We'll get there, maybe.
Got an offer on the condo a week ago last Friday, subject only to the condo documents (which they were given at the time of their showing) and financing. They came by on Wednesday for what was supposed to be a quick walkthrough and apparently turned into an impromptu inspection. Determined that the power outlet in the bathroom is improperly grounded (because it's on the light switch, which is outside the bathroom, so there's no danger), and also one of the stove burners is broken. It's been giving me trouble for awhile but now the knob is off and won't go back. So that'll take some hopefully minor repair work.
Subject removal is tomorrow but we've not heard anything from them since Wednesday, not even "hey can you get these things fixed," so I give it around two to one against that they'll actually follow through on the offer. Bleh. People.
Rejected from the Met Council job I'd interviewed for a few weeks back. Couple other possibles that I am both deeply unexcited and nonoptimistic about, but money's money.
Fiddle continues apace. I think I've corrected the worst of my terrible left hand posture. On cello your thumb rests on the back of the neck and your fingers form a C shape that doesn't come in contact with the neck, and your fingertips drop straight down onto the strings. This works much less well when you're trying to hold your instrument horizontally while not cramping up either your shoulders to pinch it in place or your thumb to support from below. Turns out you're (usually) supposed to cradle the neck between the side of your thumb and the base of your first finger, and your hand sort of slants so your fingertips touch the string at an angle. (Source, with images) This will in theory eventually make it easier for me to play at speed, which has been something of a sticking point.
I'm getting out to Wednesday and Thursday night sessions with some regularity. Thursday's a slower session, which has its benefits, and is generally one tune at a time from a limited repertoire (still many more than I know). The Wednesday session is ... impressive. There's at least three professional or semipro musicians that attend regularly. It's certainly both pushing me to up my game and giving a sense of what's possible. Someday when I have income (he laughed hollowly) I shall look into actual lessons again.
Juneuary is out in force here. Traditionally it will stay chilly and cloudy and occasionally-rainy until July long weekend. Makes it a bit harder to get up and moving but on a larger scale I approve of weather acting normal.
I hope you're well.
