I had basically never lived anywhere without AC until 2011 (it's practically a death sentence in the US South). Luckily 2011 was a cool summer in Vancouver. But when June 2012 rolled around I said "this is awful," and my ex agreed and went out and bought the portable. Also luckily I got custody of it in the divorce. It's only useful for like four weeks a year at the absolute max... but it is a godsend for those few weeks.
