island, and a touch of other
Apr. 27th, 2018 03:44 pmSo, it's been a week. Eight days. Whatever. I've been busy, and I want to write up a lot of it before I lose it, and I don't think I have time to do it justice.
Erin and I went cabin-camping with a bunch of other folks. Things happened. I played my viola in public for the first time and people liked it. ... the weekend in particular wants, needs more expansion than I can give it at the moment, or at least to not be mixed in with other things. It was good, and it
Afterwards Erin and I went to Vancouver Island for a few days. We took the ferry across, which may be an even better way to travel than the train. It's wider, for one thing: one doesn't feel quite so cramped when walking from one end to the other. And the food, at least on the ferry we took, was plentiful and delicious.
We stayed in what is I believe the nicest hotel I've ever been in: lovely comfy bed, giant bathtub and giant shower, and just a generally warm and welcoming environment. The hot tub with ocean view didn't hurt either. We took a wonderful tea at White Heather and wandered around the island, and ate oysters (decent; not something I'd obsess over but I'd be perfectly content to eat them in company with someone who did), and had a couple of Conversations. I feel a bit less wildly unanchored now, I think. Or maybe I've just gotten enough sleep lately.
And then the next day we got ready to go to tea at the Empress hotel (which I am told is The Thing To Do in Victoria) and discovered that I'd lost my wallet. So instead we tossed the car and the hotel room and our luggage for an hour and a half and failed to find it, and headed back to Vancouver earlier than expected so we could give the luggage a more thorough tossing, which also didn't locate the wallet. So that was stressful.
I then went for an interview with AWS all day Thursday, which did not result in a job offer, which I think I'm okay with: I'm not sure I want to leave my current position, and I'm not sure I wanted to go work for the soul-crushing monstrosity that is Amazon. I'm kind of irked at losing the day, but only kind of.
And today I'm back at work, having cancelled about half my credit cards before giving up, and then hearing from the hotel that yes, they did find my wallet, and will be mailing it to me. This is something of a relief.
Upcoming: going north with Erin this weekend, next weekend / early the week after is Write The Docs in Portland, and the weekend after that Jenn comes to visit. I believe this marks the third time someone I'm not related to has come to visit me from out of town since I moved out here. I am excited and also nervous! And after that things will settle down for awhile, and that will be nice too.

Date: 2018-04-30 12:26 pm (UTC)I'm sorry you lost a day to AWS, but maybe that helps you know another sliver of what you do and don't want in a job?

Date: 2018-04-30 10:52 pm (UTC)Yeah. I suspect that I am slowly becoming a less-good fit for tech in general. That's a little nerve-wracking since I don't know what I could jump ship to, certainly not "that pays comparably."
