Last week my boss Clare was in town (she's normally in London), and Wednesday turned out to be Team Outing Day. Dim sum at Kirin downtown (fancy, tasty, not the best dim sum I've had but quite good), followed by an escape room at which we did not embarrass ourselves even though we didn't make it out, followed by drinks.

That turned out to be Too Much Social for me, so instead of going to a stranger-ful munch like I'd planned I just went home. Unquestionably the right decision, even if I regret having had to miss meeting new people.

Meanwhile, on Friday I got a gum graft.

I've got some gumline receding on the left lower, probably due to overbrushing. When I showed up for the appointment they mentioned that it had receded a bit on the right as well, far enough to show the base of the crown. I hate having crowns replaced so I said "sure, glue it in all around."

(As a side note, one of the ways in which married couples get way better treatment than singles is in insurance. If you're both working (a not uncommon assumption), and you both have insurance through work, you can both get covered on both plans. This is useful in cases where you have, say, a $500 max out of pocket for things like counseling, that you can take from both sides. Or, in my case, where my dental insurance through work is utter crap but Emily's is pretty great, so I max out my plan quickly and then hers covers everything else.)

I'd expected them to cut skin off my palate or cheek and attach it, but it turns out they can grow gums in a petri dish. That involved less injury to me and I'm not particularly squicked by the thought of foreign material glued into my mouth, so I went with that option.

It didn't really occur to me to think of it as "surgery" until they actually started putting in stitches. And then they gave me an array of prescriptions and lots of advice like "don't drink hot liquid" and "ice your jaw all day," which I proceeded to ignore. I did go get the prescriptions filled, though, and picked up some extra-strength ibuprofen.

It didn't help. Or if it did, I shudder to think what it would have been like without. I spent the afternoon wincing and generally being useless at work, and went home as early as feasible and fell over.

By the next day the pain had mostly gone away, replaced by a constant weird tingling. It was the same sort of feeling you get when anaesthetic is wearing off. It didn't hurt, it just let you know it was there. Very odd.

As of today the stitches on the right have begun coming loose. Rather than keep chewing on them as they work their way up into my teeth I've trimmed the loose ends. I just hope the new bit of my gum doesn't fall off.

On Sunday I caught what will probably be my only VIFF movie of the year, Bad Genius. It's a Thai film about cheating on exams, and it was fun and tense and enjoyable to watch. I'm not super fond of the redemptionist ending but I'm not sure what sort of ending I would have preferred, so there's that.

I miss complex movies. This one wasn't super complex but it kept me entertained and kept me thinking. Maybe I'll try to make it out to another VIFF movie tomorrow, or more likely Thursday.
