weekendy

After all that, the weekend was pretty decent.

Friday night James and Julianne came over and were generally sociable and cheerful and helped me get most of the games on the shelves. And then we sat around for awhile and ate pizza and talked and relaxed.

I've missed that. I've missed being quietly sociable. I miss gaming too, but I've known for ages that gaming isn't the kind of social I want. This was closer. James left after awhile, and Julianne sat with me for another half hour or so while I talked through some Emily-related stuff. (Julianne seems to be negotiating the delicate balancing act of being extremely supportive for both me and Emily, which I appreciate more than I can say.)

Of my four bookcases: half of one is books; a little over half of one is RPGs; a little under half of one is DVDs; and the rest are boardgames. They form a pleasant nook in one corner.

I realised over the weekend that if I move the bed away from the window and from the centre of the room, there's enough space for my Cargo furniture. Might be a little cramped, but sufficient. I can have a sitting area, I can have a chair and my books/games all in the same place, with plenty of light too. I could, in theory, have someone over to snuggle on the couch.

It's a little disorienting to realise that I can fit reasonably well into a 15'x15' space. That I could conceivably fit well into an efficiency/studio/bachelor-suite/whatever one chooses to call a 0-bedroom apartment, except for the books. Not yet worth taking a chainsaw to the library. Not yet.

I really like having that nook. A bookcased-in corner was one of the things I liked a lot about the Coal Harbour place, and something I missed in New West and in the condo. It feels ... safe. Comfortable.

The main thing about this room is that there's a good-sized south-facing window. It gets /light/, despite being in the basement. Turns out I like that, at least as long as I have sufficiently heavy/dark blackout curtains. Being in a basement's nice as well: means it stays coolish in the summer, and maybe even warmish in winter.

Saturday there was a 90-minute yoga class, followed by something called "Yin Flow." That sounded interesting enough that I stuck around for it.

Turns out it's a half-hour of flow, hot yoga that focuses more on moving between poses rather than holding them, followed by a half-hour of yin, slow gentle stretching 'hold the pose softly for five minutes, in a cooler room'. This may have been an error in judgement: that half-hour of flow was pretty intense. The balancing poses were mostly Not On.

I walked out afterwards feeling entirely wrung out and kind of floaty. Which was nice, admittedly.

I then stopped by to take a look at a one-bedroom place a couple of blocks away that's in my theoretical price range. Mostly quite nice: gas fireplace, insuite laundry, storage nook ("den"). Stupid layout, though, with insufficient wallspace for books and some wasted hallspace. And the bedroom had no closet, so I could theoretically put in either a hanging-clothes rack or my dresser. Worse, I'm not sure a queen-sized bed would fit in that bedroom. I think the bed that was in there was a full and I am not certain one could get around both sides of it.

Oh well. I can afford to be picky right now, while we're still trying to figure out what's even going to happen with the condo and while I'm still wondering what I'm going to do with myself. I'm in contact with Rhonda the agent and Sherilene the broker, and I've got liquid cash for a deposit if not a full-on down payment.

Looks like close to thirty boxes of books. Last Wednesday I did most of the book-separating and -boxing. On Sunday I went over and finished the last of those, and did some furniture rearranging as well.

The book-boxing on Wednesday by myself was rough. Final divvying and moving things around with Emily was much worse. I've reached the point where interacting with her is exhausting, because neither of us is safe for the other to emote around anymore. So everything works, mostly, and we're trying our best to not hurt each other... but it's difficult and tiring.

Thirty boxes is roughly five full bookcases. (One box per shelf, six shelves per case.) Thirty boxes of games appears to be roughly three bookcases, or a little less. Conveniently, that's about what I've got. I originally had ten full-size Billys; one of those didn't survive this last move, and another halfway didn't so Emily cut it down to half-height. She came in with four two-thirds-width Billys and a real half-height one. The narrow cases are surprisingly useful, so in the Great Divide she gets two and two, and the half-height that she cut down, and I get the rest.

And now I seem to be rambling, so.
