On the one hand, yay for widespread recognition that the Confederate flag is a horribly racist emblem, even if it took a tragedy to get to that point.

On the other, I didn't really need confirmation that some number (greater than zero) of my relatives and in-laws are racist crackers.

Ahhh, yes. Facebook. I'm forever glad I got on it on a fake name and have curated my friends.

That makes a lot of sense. For me it's the minimum possible interaction with my parents and my West-by-god-Virginia-dwelling gun-store-owning HOA-president baby sister, which means it's a mostly-low-stress way to keep up with my niephlings. Mostly.

Fortunately, I've not hit this from my family. Unfortunately, I've discovered folks I thought of as 'decent folks' are anything but.

I seem to have done a pretty good job of weeding out the horrible people I'm not related to already. Not to say that there won't be more surprises later.

On the bright side, the one Mormon I know was also the only person on my Facebook feed to make a "Moops" joke, which suggests that he's both more a) politically-aware and b) liberal than I'd thought. So there's some good surprises too.

Yeah. The trouble is, there are enough faraway people who are only on FB that I want to keep up with. *sigh* That's becoming less and less of a draw as time goes on, though.
