Words are inadequate

Grauwulf tells me that tonight is the longest night in ~3.5 billion years, so it's probably uphill from here.

(I am contemplating a) that we can know something like that, b) that 3.5 billion years ago there weren't things with eyes to see the longest night, and c) that here I am inside with my electric lights and my computer screen and even if I wanted to appreciate the great and terrible darkness my outside is full or streetlights and baltimore glowing orange.)
