State Bird Improvements: "I am finishing this post the next day because I had to go buy a new computer after I threw my last one out the window when I read that Florida's state bird was the northern mockingbird. I cannot think of a more pathetic choice for one of the most bird-rich states in the nation. What's their state beverage, a half-glass of warm tap water?"

Donglegate: Why the Tech Community Hates Feminists: "'Lewis's Law' (coined by journalist Helen Lewis) holds that 'the comments on any article about feminism justify feminism.'" QED.

Sand Won't Save You This Time: "[Chlorine trifluoride is] also a stronger oxidizing agent than oxygen itself, which also puts it into rare territory. That means that it can potentially go on to 'burn' things that you would normally consider already burnt to hell and gone, and a practical consequence of that is that it'll start roaring reactions with things like bricks and asbestos tile." There's also "a video made by some French lunatics."

I'll agree with the State Bird Improvements guy about Florida, but fuck him for wanting to replace the Cactus Wren as Arizona's state bird. It nests in cholla and saguaros! You couldn't ask for something more iconic. It's not a bit boring, either -- it's fine and spotty and has tons of personality.

Okay, I'll also agree with him that Minnesota's Common Loon is a fine choice. Especially appropriate as the logo of the state lottery.

Are you saying that the comments on the Wired article you link to are bad? Because I think they're pretty reasonable.

The comments on the fast food article on the other hand...

I'm not sure I want Lovecraft on my e-reader...because my e-reader is my smartphone. Who knows what will happen to all the other apps I have?

This just begs for a Call of Cthulhu joke, but I can't seem to write a funny one this morning.

So what you're sayin' is that if you want your obituary done right, better get it done sooner rather than later?

Have you seen Dan Simmons' "Writing Well" posts? If not, I think you'd enjoy them. (I'd provide a link but LJ wants to mark it as spam if I do..)
