snow weekend like this
Dec. 22nd, 2009 11:51 amWell, I had a good weekend. Helps when it starts on Wednesday.
Thursday I hung around with
nixve (to include an Original Pancake breakfast) and then off to a winter concert with
uilos. I'd heard both Antje and Natalia before, opening for Richard Shindell (though not at the same time), so figured this would be worth catching. Which it definitely was: good energy, fun (Natalia's "jewish grandmother" commentary on "O Holy Night" was worth the price of admission all by itself), and excellent music. Antje has put up a video of her original song from the album, Thanks For the Roses (Merry Christmas), with a link to an MP3 of the song somewhere there as well. This CD has achieved a place of honor next to the John Denver & the Muppets Xmas album.
On Friday
uilos and I went ice skating at the sculpture garden. I think that was the first time this year it's really felt like December. Something about ice skating, all the people in heavy coats and gloves and scarves against the ice backdrop, brings out the sense of chill. I think I shall make a Tradition of this. Afterwards we walked through a downtown Xmas mart and had fresh warm donuts, and hung out with
elf and company for a few hours.
The snow had started falling right as we got to
elf's place. By the time we left it had started sticking to the roads in earnest. No great danger, except from other drivers; just a little slow going.
Next morning we woke up to an ongoing blizzard. I'm pretty sure this was more snow than I've ever watched fall in one place. Utterly delightful. We went out in the early afternoon to wade through the foot-plus that had fallen at that point and catch snowflakes. (Too dry for snowballs. Oh well.)
I briefly attempted to dig Straylight out of the snow, because it didn't look all that deep. And kept digging, and digging, and then remembered that my car is much shorter than a normal car, and I was actually digging down to get to it. At about that point I gave up. Spent most of the day either restless and irritable at foiled plans, or enjoying the scenery out the window.
The snowfall stopped sometime during the night, so Sunday morning I took my trusty cookie sheet and went about the unburying process. Took a little under an hour. When I pulled out of the parking spot, the snow remained sculpted around where the back half of the car had been. Later I went out to a movie (Fantastic Mr Fox, which was. . . less fantastic than advertised) and, on returning, plugged the car back into its hole.
And yesterday I realised why it is that "federal government closed" doesn't make traffic any better for me: it's because the feds all sleep late, and then come to Tysons for the afternoon, and clog up the artery roads and generally make nuisances of themselves.
Short version: it was fun, I survived. Would buy again.
